Did you know women have been getting facials since the 1500’s? YES – The 1500’s!
A facial is a family of skincare treatments that include, but are not limited to cleansing, steam, exfoliation (physical and/or chemical), extractions, creams, lotions, facial masks and massage performed by a licensed, professional Esthetician (facial specialist) in a salon or spa setting to treat facial skin concerns or to improve the appearance of the skin.
(Eastern) American vs. Western Skincare concept
As a teenager, one begins to battle hormone fluctuations creating an array of skincare concerns, primarily acne. When men and women reach their 20’s, acne typically clears up and we begin to have concerns with the aging process, and want to have beautiful skin for many years to come. Traditionally, women and men would go to a department store for “over the counter” skin care product recommendations, then go home and incorporate those products into a skincare routine.
Where as in The Eastern civilization, skincare is rooted into their culture, value and beauty standards. Korean skincare is highly valued and begins at a young age. Parents teach their children the importance of cleansers, SPF, and moisturizers since their culture focuses on prevention, which makes it more effective than the traditional Western concept. Since prevention is taught at an early age, the Korean beauty concept thereafter is to maintain, and grows into and up to a 12-step regimen.
